Homer's Iliad vs Hollywood's Troy

I am a voracious movie-goer. I feed on Hollywood films. But when it comes to classic literature, I only go for the original book version. This is because, with a few exceptions, movies based on or adapted from literature are generally inferior to the written version. All the deletions, modifications, and cinematic embellishments contribute to the film version's inferiority. It's like being served cold, highly diluted espresso.

Homer's Iliad is "the greatest war story ever told." It's the immortal tale of a ten-year war fueled by jealousy, greed, and pride. It's a war that redefined immortality. Heroes fought to the death to become "immortal." This is the biggest irony in the Iliad.

According to popular belief, the reason why the Trojan War was fought was the Judgment of Paris. When Paris gave the golden apple marked "for the fairest" to Aphrodite, who promised to give him the fairest woman, the fate of the Trojans and the Greeks was sealed. Aphrodite had to keep her word, so Paris must be led to Helen. Helen had to fall for Paris and run off with him. The wronged husband, King Menelaus of Sparta, had to avenge his tainted pride and save his face. His brother Agamemnon, a very powerful and influential chieftain, had to come to his brother's aid. The Trojans had to defend Paris and the kingdom of Troy. A war must be fought...

But who started it all? Who threw the golden apple on the banquet table that sparked jealousy among the goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite? Why would she do that?

This is where Hollywood failed us.

My BLOG: http://laserb0y.blogspot.com/

I am not really a fan of Homer's Iliad and I wasnt yet a movie-goer when TROY was shown in cinemas. Until now, I still cant find a person who has a VCD of the movie TROY. Well, I would want to watch it.

I dont actually know why many are disappointed with the film. It's quite a prejudice if we keep on saying that the movie wasnt good simply because it didnt reflect Homer's Iliad perfectly. I guess a little research as to why it was so could help. The director or the producer myt have a purpose for having such version instead of coming up with a movie that would religiously depict Iliad.

Well, forgive me. I cant understand Homer's Iliad. Well, maybe I lack interest.

Maybe soon enough, a hollywood film maker can come up with a better version of Homer's Iliad. Hopefully.

hi Ms :)
(i know im a little late in adding a comment to this blog, but i just read it :)

im marcelina BEEN2 student from your English 104 class MWF 230-330pm :)

i like your posts,., :) and yeah,., its funny how sometimes we lose sight of the origins of great things...

i mean take the world for example, most people dont even remember that it all started with God...or like famous people forget their childhood neighbors or their humble beginnings ...

ironic how something so important could so easily be forgotten by the 'wondrous' human brain...

i think thats it's actually kind of sad that troy didnt do the iliad justice with its war scenes... the book was way bloodier and disgusting. troy also depicted hector as a kind warrior... when i read the book, hector was more like, "mwahaha!! ive killed u now i must steal ur armor, defile ur dead body, put ur head on a spike, feed ur entrails to the dogs, etc. etc." the movie was like, "omg... ive killed a young man... lets stop fighting and let them bury this dead dude..." it was like WOAH! total 180 turn in character... plus they kinda messed with achilles character. in the movie he's like, "i think u gods r stupid." the book he asks them for help and obeys them... i mean... whats the deal with that?

..Hey miss A... Ooops.. i did not intend to make a rhyme.. but o well..hehe.. Hi Miss! Im Kristine Villarosa your student under Literary Criticism..Hehe.. I just read the article about the movie Troy and to tell you honestly.. i have indeed watched it, but maybe i was not very critical during that time.. Brad Pitt was hot, so was Orlando Bloom but Helen was a big disaapointment for me.. I expected her to be so worth the fall of Troy.. But seems like Hollywood had a different sense of what the word "beautiful" really entails.. (im talking like an expert!!!)
When i started learning about Mythology in depthly, that was the time i realize not to trust anything you see on the wide screen.. Or maybe i had that reaization when i was disappointed about how the Prisoner of Azkaban turned out.I am a big Harry Potter fan and i would read the novel first and wait to see it in film. But of course i would get a little disappointed sometimes if i don't see what i saw and knew through the hardbound version...
i have watched the "Helen of Troy" first, before it was remade again. And i could say that i liked that version better, although it did not equal to the experience we got from the discussion on our Mythology class..
I did not like the movie Troy at all. It bored me and it confused me in every way.. Is Achilles really had a relationship with a Trojan?(or is he really gay?)Was he that Big of a Hero? Were the gods really involved? Etcetera..etcetera.. And because of these, i decided to just listen to someone who really knows this stuff and somehow understood it(thank God for Ms. Elli!).
We can't really expect hollywood to teach us and inform us with esential stuffs, they are there for sheer entertainment, that's all. i had my fair share of disappointments and heartaches on not seeing what i have read in the motion picture version of the book but i think that's showbiz.. it's all about money there and money that.. hotness here and hotness there.. So i suggest, let's watch and be entertained but we should as well not trust evrything we see and hear..

...hi ms., this is ianne, a 3rd yr english major... i'm under your literary criticism class...hehe..

Homer's Iliad is not the first, nor the only, film to be based on a magnificent piece of literature, there's The Odyssey, Gulliver's Travel, Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, and so on. but most of the times movie goers are left disappointed after the film, especially if the movie goer has a literary background of the film.
indeed Homer's Iliad is one of the best "war stories" ever written.. and yes, its film version did not give it any justice at all.

if one has not read Homer's original story, one would consider the film as great & very entertaining; the grand sets, the terrific actors (not to mention famous), and the costumes that really added a lot of dramatic effect to the film. on the other hand, if one has read homer's Iliad before watching the film, he/she would surely be disappointed.

of course we could not expect the film to showcase homer's work word-for-word (it would become a very, very, very long film), but to the very least the editor, producers, and directors of the film should not put the Iliad's literary value for granted.. in fact in every film based from magnificent literary pieces of the world, the literary value of the piece/work should not be forgotten or taken for granted for its "cinema value"...

but nonetheless, these kinds of remakes also give both readers and movie goers the chance to evaluate the real value of the film and of the literary piece.

and the Judgment of Paris...it's one of my favorite myth. it explained everything. actually, it wasn't Paris' fault...it was Zeus', he was the one who told the 3 goddesses to refer to Paris for who should truly deserve the "apple" w/c Eris left at the banquet...the beginning of everything...

lastly, we still shouldn't close our minds to film remakes, we all still give them a try. if we do get disappointed at the end, at least we have proven to ourselves that we know our literature and we didn't let the cinematic effects of the film blind us.

god bless:-)

keep an open mind:-)

As for me, Troy is an "OK" movie. The cast was really good and the fight scenes were brilliant. The one thing that bothers me though is that it was somewhat different from Homer's creation. The film didn't even show the gods that helped the Trojans and the Greeks.

"Troy" is loosely-based on Homer's "The Illiad". There's no denying that it's been impressively put-together, but despite its myriad of action sequences, the whole thing moves along at a snail's pace ( 3 hours? talaka..ZzZzZz).

I give it 3 stars over 5 :)

I have seen the movie Troy gazillion times already and everytime i get a chance to see it again it felt like I have seen it for the first time. What I'm trying to imply is that the movie has totally etched a mark on my heart. It opened my mind to do further readings about mythological stories and I may also consider as one of the reasons i chose to major in English.

Unfortunately, when I studied Mythology I have discovered that the movie was far off the real story of the "Iliad". There where a lot of revisions murdering Homer's Iliad and giving no justice to the beauty of such literary work. Studying Iliad was interesting and watching Troy was fascinating.

A piece of advice to those who plan to watch the movie Troy. Read the epic first because beyond the beauty of the visual effects of the movie are more interesting parts that not have been unfold.

well, I have heard the story, Troy before I had watched then movie itself. This amazed me of the fact that the story and the movie were closely similar with one another.
Way back my high school years I wasn't really that fond of taking stories until its very abyss part but then the gods and goddesses fascinate me that I would listen to my Mythology teacher during my 2nd year college here in La Salle.
To fathom and appreciate the movie, I believe that one must really have a knowledge beforehand like reading the story, have a lecture or listen to any one who had a prior knowledge of the said fictitious literature.
To end with, the movie, Troy had really affect me in ways that "Love conquers all." Well, maybe, somehow, someday. Love, vengeance, loyalty, courage, war, determination, death...

Hello miss H! This is Cheri from your English 105 MWF 12:30-1:30 BEEN3A class.

Before watching Troy, I have already watched another movie adaptation of Homer's Iliad entitled Helen of Troy and I could say that the latter was better. Although I have to say that both films do lack essential information for the start of the story.
Hollywood indeed did not give justice to the masterpiece Homer had created. A lot of brilliant scenes were erased and some were even changed. And aside from the fact that Eris and the gathering of gods and goddesses were not portrayed, I hated the way Troy interpreted the characteristics of Paris. In the movie Paris seemed to be too much of a coward which according to what we discussed in mythology class, was not true. I mean when he faced Achilles, he literally whimpered and begged for his brother's help. If Paris acts like such a spineless man, why on earth would Helen fall in love with him?
One thing I did appreciate about Troy was the way it gave emphasis upon Achilles' character. He seemed more of the lead than Paris which I actually liked since Brad Pitt is so hot ;-)
I guess Hollywood gives more attention to how the story would "sell" rather than how the story should actually "tell" or be told. Besides this is the kind of thing regular movie fans actually like.

Troy was a great movie. It's all about love & war in ancient Greece & it's a tale of heroism concerning the Trojan war.
Troy is a breathtaking movie with beautiful actors. Characters did extremely well. I like the effects of the film and especially the costumes they are wearing.I think the movie was so expensive.

obviously when we try to criticize the
whole movie it is quite different from homer's Novel but i think they did a good job in making the film but we can't deny the fact that most people who loved literature got disappointed b'coz of some changes in the film.

We have to open our minds and try to understand deeply the importance of literature b'coz in that way we wl be able to give justice in their works.

WE
HAVE TO READ!!!!

good morning! i'm Sarah Faith Catanus of BEEN3.

"Troy" is such a successful movie that it really became a hit. But I admit that the movie lacks information. We actually studied this war story last semester in our World Literature subject.

This movie is really good and effective for viewers of this generation for them to know about how the war occured.

But what really sticked to my mind was the question you stated on who started it all..haha.. It's all because of Eris, the goddess of discord. I believe that the green monster can be very destructible but I didn't know that it could go this far(the surging war of two cities.

So it all comes down to one point. It's because of jealousy and vanity of the goddesses.

Hi Miss!!We were able to discuss the Iliad of Homer in our mythology class last year and I really got interested with the story..After reading the excerpts of the Iliad, it made want to see the movie TROY..I'd say it was a good one..I love the character of Hector,he never hesitated to defend his brother from Achilles,it was heroic on his part.
I also love the story of Achilles and Briseis,it was just romantic for me..The character of Paris wasn't impressive and I feel sad for Orlando Bloom,he is not the Orlando Bloom that I know from Lord of the Rings..

way back then in high school, i remember our teacher(in computer class) used to have a story telling about the "troy". when we had our lesson about trojan.

it is indeed, for me, the "best war ever written"!i'd watched the movie, but not in a full version(may be because im not that fond of watching "war" movies).but i found the story very interesting. jealousy, prejudice, that i think, started the war.

to end with, the story tells itself that it was great! as i read it and heard about my friends' oppinion. let's just keep to be open minded and try to understand fully the literature.

I have not seen the movie of Homer's Iliad but we already had discussion of this in our Mythology class when we were in second year college.according to some people that already seen the movie, the story was a little biased because it all centered to Achilles which was played by Brad Pitt. Almost all of the literary works that were made into movies always have revisions and for me, it somehow destroy the writer's works. Based on what i have read, Iliad was really one of the greatest stories ever written. it was indeed a masterpiece and a having movie version may confuse the audience if that certain scene took place.

hi ms. A...

When i first watched the movie Troy...i was like..."wow...Brad Pitt is the lead actor..."...Well,I was young then...and I watched the movie because of two resons...first is because I really am interested in Greek mythology and Romeo and Juliet eversince i was very young, since my mother is an english teacher and I read her college notes bout them...they really facinated my young mind...so, the second reason is because of the cast...hehehe...not only brad pitt is there, but Orlando Bloom also played as Paris!whew! who could resist watching that?!(//_^)...

so,when i watched the movie...my mind boggled with certain questions about the characters and the way the story went...since i had ideas of how the story in the trojan war went....these questions kept nagging me and I, as a result, kept nagging my mother "did achilles really fell in love w/ a trojan girl?", "was it really what happened?" and questions of the like...then,she told me that the film was really different from the original story...but as time went by...i just forgot all about it and just waved it aside since i really don't have the clear idea of what "REALLY" happened in th Illiad...

it was until I had mythology as my major subject.. that's when i really, trully realized that the movie is drastically a far cry from the real story of the Illiad...my gosh!though the casts were really hunky guys...the movie didn't really gave justice to Homer's masterpiece...it is really sad that the story had been distorted from its original war epic story...instead,the movie just focused on Achilles...the god's and goddesses were not really there...then, what's with Achilles falling in love with a trojan girl named Mercedez?!or whatever that girl's name is...hmmmmmmm...i'm just thankful because questions that bothered me when i was young when i watched the movie...finally were given light...and if not for my Mythology teacher...and for the books i've read...and the explanations of my mother...i would still be trying to figure out where those scenes in the movie were taken in between the chapters of the book...

i do think that the movie's interpretation is a really lousy one...i dont even think they interpreted it at all! hmmmmmmmm... they snatched the wonderful ang glorious sparkle of the Trojan war...battle scenes that were supposed to be dramatic and historical were not at all what they should be in the movie...hiazt...what happened to the Illiad?!if Homer were alive...i don't think he'll allow literary slaughtering in his Masterpiece...hmmmmmmmmmmmm...

so,all in all...(not that i'm an expert or something, but this is from my own point of view and from what i learned thru years)...
I really think that the movie really, super duper, to the highest level... spoiled the whole essence, meaning and glory of the most dramatic and wonderful war epic the literary world has ever known, which is Homer's Illiad...

Good day ms...ds s Mae Zamora from your BEEN literary criticism class..

I stongly agree to what you have commented regarding the adaptation of classic literature into movies. I am not really a regular movie-goer, myself,..neither have i watched the whole movie TROY (maybe, only a portion of the movie )..NOR have I ever read the whole book of Homer (I have a good background, though, during our mythology class with ms. Elli)..hehehe...

but I have this notion about turning classics into movies as influenced by our Mythology teacher which happens to be Ms. Elli, still---hehehe.. I say, it's not the masterpiece anymore...it has already been edited and revised to suit the current audience or has been added a "little spice" to the extent of (often times) jeopardizing the whole story...for a director, their sales weigh heavier than the preservation of these masterpieces (non offense to those who aren't!!)..and for the audience,(there's a good no.of them), easy enterainment is what matters. I am not against the movie nor of the fans, of course, ..i can't blame them admiring the hotness of the actors/actresses portraying each character and the live battle scenes which are well-served in the movie because, honestly, they are actually appealling...but my simple advice would be...

we should and must not be satisfied with watching the movie alone; let us also try to figure out the real text (or at least a little backround of it) and the real turn of events according to the athors even before seeing it in the big screen...
because it pays to know the truth amidst the overwhelming set of facts.
And besides it is an edge to have read and seen the movie at the same time. it lays before you the point of comparison and contrast making room for intelligent criticisms..

By the way ms...how could you have thought of such names for your dogs...CUTE!!!
it tells a lot about you--something interesting!! hahaha...
