Of Vampires and Horcruxes: Quest for Immortality

Now here's one tough (and maybe even, crazy) question for the Twilight and Harry Potter series junkies: What do Bella Swan and Lord Voldemort (Tom Marvolo Riddle) have in common?

You might ask, "What would Meyer's clumsy, compassionate 18-year-old girl-next-door living in an obscure town called Forks share in common with Rowling's scheming, evil, criminally-insane dark wizard of the wizarding world?"

I have just started reading New Moon, the second book of Stephanie Meyer's Twilight saga, alternatingly with J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter Book 6: Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince, which I decided to re-read in anticipation of the screening of its film adaptation week after next. Incidentally, I'm taking up Archetypal Criticism Approach with my Literary Criticism class. This critical approach "gets its impetus from psychologist Carl Jung, who postulated that humankind has a 'collective unconscious,' a kind of universal psyche, which is manifested in dreams and myths and which harbors themes and images that we all inherit. Literature, therefore, imitates not the world but rather the 'total dream of humankind."' (Walker, p. 17)

"Archetypes are the unknowable basic forms personified or concretized in recurring images, symbols, or patterns which may include motifs such as the quest or the heavenly ascent, recognizable character types such as the trickster or the hero, symbols such as the apple or snake, or images such as crucifixion (as in King Kong, or Bride of Frankenstein)--all laden with meaning already when employed in a particular work. " (Walker, 2002)

Archetypal critics search for archetypal patterns in literary works (e.g.,character types, story lines, settings, symbols). According to Jung, these patterns are embedded deep in the "collective unconscious" and involve "racial memories" of situations, events, relationships from time immemorial. (Murfin and Ray, p.23)

If this is starting to sound interesting to you, then you have chosen the right career path-- that of a future literature teacher. Knowledge and understanding of the critical approaches will also improve you as a reader. You will become a "critical" reader, not the passive swallow-everything-hook-line-and-sinker kind. Now, back to the question I posed earlier:

In the light of the Jungian or Archetypal Criticism, what's the common denominator between Bella Swan and Voldemort?

What archetypal patterns (in character types, story line, setting, etc.) can you spot and point out?

To those who have not experienced these phenomenal works of pop literature, you may cite at least two works of short fiction or two novels, at least, and share your analysis. But I strongly encourage you, soon-to-be teachers of literature, to expand your horizon and include in your reading repertoire books that define the generation that you'll be shaping.

Carpe diem!

Hi1 this is Joanna Cammelle Valladolid of BEEN3a

I’m a Vampire Fan since Twilight but never been fan of Harry Potter books, although, I have seen the movies. I have been crazy about Twilight Saga and it opened me to try and read books of different genres. I was never a fan of love stories but now I am. I now even read the Sookie Stackhouse novel a.k.a Trueblood (a vampire novel).
What can I say about Isabella “bella” Marie Swan and Tom Riddle a.k.a Voldemort in common? Maybe, the longing for immortality? Though, I could say that their reasons are not the same. Tom is in the black side of course, he wants to be immortal because of POWER. Bella just want to be immortal because of Edward Cullen (The Glory of First Love of course!).
I would like to extend my comment about the twilight saga. I’m really excited about the coming movie of New moon and I am sure that there will be a little creasing of my eyebrows because of the revisions. There lots of Vampire stories out there and the human always jump in the Vampire world but what draws my attention to the novel is that(except that Edward is my ideal guy), there are certain traits of Meyer’s vampires that are unique like the fangs and the glittering of their skin in the sunlight. Not to mention, the fascinating history of quileutes. I have to disagree that Twilight and Harry Potter are at the same wavelength and people have to fight of what novel is the best because they are not in the same genre. I think critics should stop making a buzz about these novels because they are both good in their own ways.

Hi there! Ritchel Yelo here from BEEN3A

I have read the books of Stephanie Meyer from Twilight up to the last book which is Breaking Dawn. I'm not a big fan of Harry Potter but I watched the movies though. Maybe I’m in to love stories than magical stuffs...

I think what Bella and Voldemort have in common is that both longs for immortality. But the difference between them is that Bella wants it so she could live forever with the person she loves while Voldemort wants immortality because of power over harry i guess... All I really know bout Voldemort is that he's bad and wants to ruin Harry. hahaha....

I can't say I am an avid fan of the twilight saga but I like the story especially the last book where Bella had what she really wanted which is immortality. I'm not really excited with the upcoming movie, New Moon. Well, I'm not a Jacob fan too. I like how the author described Edward Cullen in the book but in the movie, I don't find Robert Pattinson as super hot, drop-dead gorgeous vampire but he's appealing though... hahahahaaa

Hi Miss.. This is Kristine Anne E. Villarosa, your student in literary criticism..hehe..
When i first saw the writings on the board last Monday which reads: " Of Vampires and Horcruxes: Quest for Immortality", I was completely excited and ecstatic...i just love seeing those 2 words. vampires and horcruxes. Twilight and Harry Potter. The 2 collection of books which stunned and enthralled me in every way possible. So yeah, im a potterhead and a fanpire..hehe.. Excited as i already was, after the class i opened the site... And when i finally landed here, and i finally read the question.. i was puzzled.
Isabella Marie Swan and Tom Marvolo Riddle aka Voldemort have something in common? you've got to be kidding me. The question hit me like a truck. It took me some time to figure it out. So i read it again and i realized the title gave a hint. It was in front of me.
I was confused at first of course(who wouldn't be?). Of all the characters to compare why Bella and Voldemort? I have to ask myself why. There must be something both of them shared. There must be something both of them experienced. After mush thought... I came with these Conclusions:
*Both of them were products of a broken family.
Bella's parents separated when she was still young. Charlie And Renee(Bella's Parents) grew apart leaving Bella with Renne and Charlie living in Forks alone. But later since Bella did'nt want to hinder her mom's happiness of marrying again she decided to move to Forks and live with her Father. There her life changed forever.
On the other hand, Merope Gaunt, Voldemort's mother fell in love with a muggle. but the muggle Tom Riddle Sr. did not return that affection. And so Merope with the use of Amortentia(the love potion) made Tom Riddle Sr. love her back.
They were together for quite sometime, but Merope, thinking that maybe Tom would love her now after years of being together stopped using the Amortentia to Tom. When Tom snapped out of it, he was disgusted with Merope, and left her and his son-to-be which was Tom Marvolo Riddle. Merope, devastated and hurt stopped using magic. She became very weak and eventually died leaving her son in an orpahanage, the boy having no idea who and what he is.

cont..previous...(gosh it wont fit.. please bear with me Ms. i have to cut it into several segments)

As a result, Bella and Voldemort became somehow detached and unfitting to their world.
Bella, a loner. She isolates herself from everyone else. She shuts everyone out(maybe that's why Edward can get in her head). She doesn't see herself as someone who stands out eventhough she's smart. She was inferior.
Voldemort, clueless at first, but later discovered who he is and what hw can do, he became even detached to the world, he was feeding himself with power and viewing himself as someone who should be the center of it all. he didn't have friends. He considers even the Death eaters as mere allies and subjects.
Bella and Voldemort was affected differently by that circumstance. Bella is the protagonist so the effect of not having a complete family was subtle. Besides she had the taste of a complete family when she was still young. Voldemor is the antagonist, and the effect of not having any idea of what family is, not experiencing any form of love made him a monster, the effect was extreme.
We all know how family and love affects us. It shapes us to the persons we are or to the persons we become. And so, it indeed affected both Bella and Voldemort and even contributed to their identical want.

And that Identical want, the most obvious similarity is their extreme want for Immortality.
of course they have differnt reasons. Bella wanted to become immortal because she wants to be with Edward forever. Voldemort on the other hand wanted Immortality so bad because he wants power and fame. He is enthralled with the idea of having the world under his feet.
Both reasons were selfish. Bella didn't think of anyone but herself. She didn't thought of her mom, her dad, her friends and even Edward. She was so caught with the idea of being with Edward forever that she did not put into consideration how he would feel about changing her. How it tortured him to even consider the idea of changing her.
Voldemort to is selfish. He did'nt care about the lives he took. he didn't gave a damn on anybody but himself. He wants to be immortal. No matter what it takes. he splitted his soul into 7. Immortality has a high price.

Bella. She wanted to be a vampire.
Voldemort. He splitted his soul apart.
2 differnt ways, the same end. Immortality.
Both sought for it, on succeeded the other failed.
The triumph of good over evil. It never gets old.
Bella was not evil, selfish yes, but not evil. She was just so ruled by her passion and love.
Voldemort was evil. Ruled by anger and hatred. He never understood the idea of love. And it later destroyed him.
Both of them did not sought for immortality alone. I think immortality connotes Security.
Bella knows that being a vampire would secure her to Edward's side forever. Securing her with the love she unconsiously longed for.
Voldemort knows that being immortal would secure his place in the wizarding world. Voldemort wanted to be someone whom everyone shall submit. He misunderstood the whole concept of love.

Whew... I can't beleive i pulled that one off. I was dead serious for a matter of time was I?
So, for me, Those are pretty mush it. Those are the things that tied them together.
I have never expected, that Bella, the girl i'll practically be envious at all my life have something in common with Voldemort, the evil soul-ripping dude that kept my Harry from a happy ending. But then again, the facts are there. The connection was there waitng to be unveiled. It's so amzing to be able to point out the similarities between completely differnt fictional charcters. I certainly had fun. And archetypes rock!!hehe. this might be too long(i have to cut it into 3 or 4) but as i have said these are my favorite topics and i can't just help it.
My world would be quite boring without Harry Potter and Twilight. And i'm quite glad pointing out the things that somehow connects them.

- " Can't you see that I'd trade everything i have to be you? You have the choice that I did'nt have and you're choosing wrong. "- Rosalie Lilian Hale

Hey there guyz!
My name is Fame. I am one of the English Major students of USLS. I am here to jot down my thoughts regarding the commonalities of Tom Marvolo Riddle a.k.a. “Lord Voldermort” of HP Series and Isabella Swan a.k.a “Bella” of Twilight Saga. Tom falls at the bad side while Bella favors the good side.
I had read HP series years ago and could only recall significant incidents. I also read the Twilight Saga a year ago because I was really curious of the teenage uproar. It turned out that these books were about magical stuff with unusual scenarios about friendship, family, love and romance and a lot more. These books gave me delights because of its twists and turns. I laughed, I cried and trembled together with the villains and heroes.
Dreams and Reality
There is a similarity between Tom and Bella, in reality as you can see in the movie or read in the book, they are both pale in terms of complexion and quite attractive in their own way. They also both want to belong into something. They dreamt and wished for it. In Tom’s case, he wanted to belong to a community, a society consisted of true-blooded witches and wizards- free of mud-bloods (half-human, half- witch/ wizard), squib (a true-blooded witch or wizard who doesn’t have magical powers) and muggles (pure human). He craved to form this society and rule above them simply because he hated himself for being a mud-blood. In Bella’s case, she wanted to belong to the Cullen’s clan of vampires because of her love for Edward. In obtaining these goals, they must possess extra ordinary power, they need to be strong, and they need to be immortal, the undead.
Tom can only persuade the magical community through brute force. He believed that immortality and possessing dark magical powers are the answers to his dreams. He used different methods to ensure his immortality. Horcruxes were his last chance to revive himself and become immortal. Good thing though, Harry and his troop knew about these and made a vow to find and destroy these objects which held the souls of Lord Voldemort. (Harry was one of the horcruxes, oh! spoiler!) ;-P
She’s irrevocably in- love with a vampire. She loves him too much, to the extent of giving up her mortality. Bella can only be immortal if she persuades Edward that she’s strong enough to take the pain (vampire transformation) and the reality that she’s going to live forever. Bella, by the way, isn’t strong, she was even clumsy. That was one of the reasons Edward was drawn to her. He wanted to protect her all the time- protect her FOREVER. Bella became a vampire by accident… As I understood the story, if Bella didn’t get pregnant, Edward would never transform her. The half- vampire baby crawled out from Bella’s stomach, ripping her apart. Again, that was one of the twists. Bella turned out to be special too; she’s a shielder. Edward, a mind- reader, couldn’t read her thoughts even when she was a human. He was really frustrated and at the same time curious about her. When she became a vampire, her mind guarded her from any form of attack from other gifted vampires. Her gift became stronger when they were threatened by the Volturi’s clan. She managed to build a shield around her family and their allies during the confrontation.
Lastly, Tom and Bella had the word “determination” on their vocabulary list. They both have the will to do anything for IMMORTALITY.

I'm Katrina Cassandra C. Ong BEEN3_A...Hi Ms. A...

IMMORTALITY,begged by Bella Swan, hungered by Voldemort and even searched by Dante (Divine Comedy)from the depths of hell to paradiso. Would it be for love, for power or for everlasting life that these personas wanted immortality?

The first book I have ever read that I was able to finish from the first page until the end was TWILIGHT, one of my greatest achievements, I may say. I can't believe it myself that i'm capable of reading such an unrealistic love story about an ordinary girl who's life was saved by this mysterious, so beautiful and untouchable boy, a vampire. In the end made me want to have my very own vampire who will save me from danger, enough with superman my hero, it's so hundred years ago. Unfortunately, I haven't read any Harry Potter book but I have seen Harry Potter movies though, enough to say that Bella Swan and Voldemort has something in common, both wanted immortality.

Immortality for two different reasons. Bella wanted immortality to live forever with her vampire. Voldemort wants immortality to have power over the world of magic.

May it be for love, for power or for everlasting life there may be many other reasons but for me immortality is loosing your soul and one can never experience the fire of love, the pain of power and the breath of life without a soul.

I believe that I love movies and I do effectively understand watching rather that reading. I have heard my classmates talking about the Twilight Book that they got disappointed of the movie because it wasn't exactly the same as that in the book. I'm happy to hear such for the very reason that I havn't even read a word from the book, Twilight. But the movie was awesome and I could make me even wish for an "Edward" in my life.

I do watch Harry Potter series and same thing, i havn't read any book of it but I bet I'm still in track with the film.

With the question, what are the similarities of Bella and Valdemort, I can say that they are both strong in personality and they long for "immortality". They both wanted to live forever but with different reason, Valdemort with a bad stand and Bella for the love af her life. Well, I don't want to live forever but I wanted to be forever young.

How ya doin, Ms. A? This is Cheri Miranda BEEN3A from your Literary Criticism class.

If I am not taking up our course and I stumble upon your question, "What does Bella Swan and Voldemort have in common?," I would have thought the question to be funny. I mean, Bella is vulnerable and naive while Voldemort is the total opposite. Not only that, Twilight talks about vampires and Harry Potter about wizards, so wouldn't it be weird to compare the two? But now that I actually consider it, the two(Bella and You-Know-Who), among many other famous literary characters, share one thing in common - the quest for immortality.
The desire for living forever has been one of the most famous archetypes featured in the literature of almost all countries. It is present in Greek/Roman mythology and even in Sumerian literature specifically in the epic of Gilgamesh.
Though both Bella and Voldemort long for everlasting life, this particular commonality does not make them equal as characters for me. One reason is that Voldemort out of being immortal, wanted to rule supreme over others. On the other hand, Bella only wished for a life with Edward for all time.
I am such a fan of both Twilight and Harry Potter but I never would have considered the comparison. So as a co-fan, thank you miss for giving me an opportunity to compare both my favorite books on a whole new perspective.

elow..princess here! well, I'm not really a fan of Twilight or of Harry Potter but I guess the common denominator between Bella and Voldemore is their eminent role in the stories. Bella looks dazingly gorgeous as the damsel-in distress of Edward Cullen. Voldemore, on the other hand, would always be the immortal enemy of Harry Potter. He would always look for ways and means to plan havoc on the school of witches and wizards. So no matter on what side they are, they are just amazing!
Hope to read Twilight and Harry Potter books too. In the meantime, I'll settle on eaves-dropping about the subject...God bless , guys..*_*
